Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as a vehicle for activism. Her mother was also a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English as well as African American studies. While she was still studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the garbage belonging to one of the juries. In the course of her work she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
